The Bodyguard is a role designed for keeping Town aligned roles alive by guarding a target and intercepting any players that attempt to attack that target. If a player the Bodyguard guards at night is attacked, the Bodyguard and the attacker die both instead, while the guarded player is left unharmed.
Along the with Doctor, the Bodyguard is one of the Town's principal protective roles. However, it is unique because success means death for the Bodyguard. GIven the typical number of scum roles in a game, as long as the Bodyguard can successfully kill a scum player (as opposed to a Town player), this will be considered a successful game for him or her.
- Being a successful Bodyguard requires you to anticipate which player will be attacked at night and to guard that player.
- If an important Town role has been revealed / confirmed such as a Marshall or Mayor, this may be your best best, especially since a Marshall can never be protected by a Doctor and a Mayor usually cannot either (per default options).
- Otherwise, you should guard who you think will be likely be attacked by the Mafia or the Neutral Killer (if applicable in your game).
- Most hosts enable the option which allows the Bodyguard to ignore invulnerability. This means that the Bodyguard will be able to kill the player attacking its target even if that player has night immunity.
- In this case, the Bodyguard should be guarding players every night including the first night of the game.
- However, if the host has disabled this option, you may want to wait until there is an important Town role to save. This is because a number of killing roles such as the Godfather, Dragon Head, and Serial Killer typically have night immunity. If you protect a player from them on Night 1, you may die for nothing on Night 1 if the attacker was, for example, an night immune Serial Killer.
- Please note that Bodyguards are also capable of killing Town members that attack the player you are guarding, including, but not limited to a Vigilante that shoots your target.
- Therefore, you should be careful who you choose to protect, as it is possible to save an evil player from a Town killing role. This is a particularly bad outcome for the Town as they will have lost both a Bodyguard and the Town Killing role (for example, a Vigilante), while sparing the life of an evil player.
- Advanced Strategy: When a powerful Town role such as Mayor is confirmed and a Bodyguard is also known to be in the game (perhaps a set role Bodyguard was included in the setup by the host), the evil players will generally assume the Bodyguard is protecting the Mayor and not attack him.
- In this case, you may consider protecting other players and leaving the Mayor unguarded, in the hopes that the evil player will attack another player.
- This is a somewhat risky strategy given the importance of a Mayor in leading the Town, but it can be very effective if executed well. See WIFOM for more information about such gambits.

- If death descriptions or night sequence is enabled, both the Bodyguard and the attacker will be reported as dying from a duel. This will provide the Town with confirmation of the Bodyguard successfully guarding a player (whether Town or scum), but not indicate who the protected player was. Therefore, it is helpful for the Bodyguard to list his or her targets in his or her last will in order to give the Town a better idea of whom the Mafia or Neutral Killer have been targeting.
- Bodyguards will protect Cultists from the Mason Leader. In this case, both the Bodyguard and the Mason Leader will die in the ensuing duel. Therefore, you should be especially with who you guard if you are aware of a Mason Leader and Cult in your game.
- Bodyguards do NOT protect from Arsonist douses nor will they protect from Arsonist ignitions. Therefore, they are far less useful if the Neutral Killing role is an Arsonist as opposed to a Serial Killer or Mass Murderer.
- If a Bodyguard guards a person who visits a Veteran who goes on alert, the Bodyguard will die (the Veteran will not on account of alerting). This can be very frustrating for the Bodyguard and very harmful for the Town effort.
- The Bodyguard will stay together with his guarded target. That means he won't die if a Mass Murderer visits his target, if that target visited someone else that night.
